Sheffield Social 1

Lucy Cheesman writes:

Sunday 13th March 2016 saw the first ever Yorkshire Sound Women Network event in Sheffield. The social was held at DINA Venue and Gallery and was attended by nine women with a range of backgrounds, experience and interests.

Following introductions round the table Amy and I introduced some of the aims and work of YSWN, including past and upcoming events. The group discussed their reasons for coming along, and we agreed some informal aims for a series of social events to be held more or less monthly in Sheffield:

  • Networking
  • Sharing work and seeking feedback
  • Informal workshops and demos
  • Invited speakers
  • Sharing information via an email list and social media

This was followed by a brainstorming session on workshops – both those that members might deliver and those they would like to attend. From this discussion was born a wide range of other ideas, from potential collaborations through to proposed events. The group also began work on a list of free resources to be shared across the network. A more detailed write-up of these discussions can be found here.

Laura presented a recent sound installation project called ‘Spatial Resonances’ – you can read more about Laura’s project on her website.

Becky introduced her work as a DJ creating mixes using music from retro computer games. You can listen to some of Becky’s mixes at her Mixcloud page.

Future meetings will be held on the 1st Thursday of each month at DINA Venue & Gallery – if you would like any more information please visit the webpage or email Lucy at

You can also keep up with YSWN events in Sheffield via the Facebook page (search for Yorkshire Sound Women Network – Sheffield). A big thank you to Laura for volunteering to maintain the Facebook page and many thanks also to Deborah for hosting the meetings at DINA.
