Sun. 22 Mar 2020
Unfortunately we’ve taken the decision to postpone this event in the interests of protecting public health during the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak. We hope to reschedule it for a future date and will post new details as soon as they are available.
Join YSWN Huddersfield Makers for a fun afternoon where you can try your hand at DJing, build a contact mic and make music on mini synths.
Part of the larger Yorkshire Sound Women Network, YSWN Huddersfield Makers is a local group of women* with an interest in sound technology and making music.
We get together and share skills, ideas and activities with each other on topics such as music production, sound engineering, synthesis, basic soldering, location/field recording and computer based coding. You don’t need to have any knowledge or kit to join us – just an interest in sound and music tech.
We recently ran a series of beginner’s DJ workshops and now some of our ‘graduates’ are ready to share what they know! Join us for a relaxed afternoon where you can enjoy tea, coffee and homemade cake while listening to DJ sets in a range of styles. Between sets you’ll also have the chance to try DJing yourself in a friendly, no-pressure environment.
In addition, we’re running one of our popular DIY touch contact microphone soldering workshops, where Dr Liz Dobson will show you how to solder and assemble this simple yet fascinating piece of kit that captures sound through whatever it touches. The workshop costs £5 to cover materials costs for the microphone which you can take home. There are 12 places available – please sign up via the dedicated link here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/98410784305
The afternoon is also a chance to meet the current Huddersfield Makers members, find out our plans for the next few meet-ups and share suggestions for future activities. We’ll have a few Stylophone, Teenage Engineering and Korg Little Bits mini synths around for you to play on and have a go at making your own electronic music with – we might even get a jam session going, which everyone is welcome to join.
Free entry, activities and refreshments apart from the workshop which needs to be booked in advance.
*We welcome all women (cis- and transgender) plus non-binary people. Under-16s need to bring a parent/carer (any gender); if you have dependent children in your care then it’s fine to bring them along to the event, although please note that for health and safety reasons the contact mic workshop is not suitable for under-10s and we’re unable to offer any dedicated childcare facilities.
The venue has level access and lifts to all floors; if you have any specific accessibility requirements please get in touch via firstname.lastname@example.org and we will do our best to accommodate these.
This event is being delivered as part of the YSWN Amplify programme, supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
Join our mailing list and we’ll keep you informed with the latest YSWN news, upcoming events and related opportunities.
