Join YSWN for an inspiring and empowering day of talks, workshops and advice from leading professionals in the audio industry.

This third free event in our Level Up! series focuses on sound engineering – from capturing live performances to creating immersive sound for VR. Whether you’re studying music technology, already working in the field or just want to find out what you could aim for, don’t miss out on the chance to Level Up! your knowledge and skills.

Getting a Foot in The Door: Careers in Sound Engineering

Darryn de la Soul, founder of Soulsound, gives you the essentials on breaking into sound engineering. From the range of roles available to the best ways to impress potential employers, Darryn draws upon her years of experience working live events and training sound engineers to offer practical advice and tips for anyone considering a career in what can be a notoriously closed-door industry.

Introduction to Sound for VR

Ana Monte, co-founder of DELTA Soundworks unwraps the mysteries of immersive sound. Drawing upon her own work designing audio for VR projects ranging from virtual tours to an interactive simulated heart for medical students, she explains the basics and the mindblowing creative potential of this fast-developing sector of audio. Plus there’s the chance to experience DELTA Soundworks’ projects yourself on a VR headset.

Studio workshops

New to sound engineering? Beginners are welcome at our hands-on workshop sessions in one of Leeds College of Music’s state-of-the-art studios.

Led by Ellie Baker, the workshop will focus on capturing a typical studio recording session with a singer-songwriter and the main processes needed to engineer a production. This workshop will tailor to both individuals who have no prior experience as well as to those with more advanced knowledge. Processes such as working with an SSL desk, EQ, tonal shaping, microphone properties and placements will be covered.

Workshop places are strictly limited on a first-come, first-served basis so arrive early to sign up on the day!

Lunch is also included with your free ticket and there’ll be plenty of opportunities on the day to meet and network with other women and non-binary people who share your interests.

Darryn de la Soul

About Darryn

Darryn de la Soul has worked in the live sound industry for nearly two decades, and is best known for her work in live audio production and training young engineers, as well as supporting all live event technicians through the Soulsound Membership Scheme.

She started her career as a live sound engineer at various London venues, and quickly broadened her scope to include production management of live events, most notably: Faster Than Sound, the 50th anniversary show celebrating the Lovell Radio Telescope at Jodrell Bank, and Long Player Live. In more recent years she has been deeply involved in POW! and Ramsgate Festivals and conceived the Exploratorium at PLASA London – a space for technical know-how and innovation to be showcased off the sales floor.

Her flair for organising, manifesting and motivating others led to her being asked to develop and implement the Live Sound Diploma for Alchemea College of Audio Engineering, one of the most respected qualifications in audio engineering. Darryn has also dabbled in filmmaking, winning Best Short Documentary at the London Independent Film Festival in 2008 with her guerrilla documentary So You Shall Reap. She also worked as location recordist on numerous short films.

Ana Monte

About Ana

Ana Monte is co-founder and Executive Director of DELTA Soundworks, an audio production company with focus on immersive audio. She holds a degree from California State University – Chico, where she studied Music Industry and Technology with a focus on Recording Arts, and the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg, where she studied Film Sound and Sound Design.

For her work as sound designer, Ana has received diverse sound awards including Best Sound Design in a Drama series at the LA Webfest 2015 and a Best Sound nomination from the LA Film Review. Ana is vice-chair of the AES Central Germany chapter.

About Ellie

As well as studying at Leeds College of Music, Ellie is currently self-producing her own album, which focuses on collaborating with various artists such as fiddle, trumpet and cello players, to combine these acoustic recordings with electronic manipulation and production. Previously she has worked with and produced rock, jazz and pop bands as well as various singer songwriters.
